Self Care While Traveling

Going on a vacation can be very exciting! Experiencing new sights and cultures and trying new cuisines and drinks are some of the many reasons we want to travel.

But have you ever gotten back from your destination more exhausted than when you left? Or sluggish after so many restaurant meals and hotel breakfast buffets? Taking proper care of yourself is very important so that you can enjoy the vacation you have worked so hard for and dreamed about. Let's talk about some easy steps to take to ensure you have the best possible time on your trip.
Move around and stretch
Taking a few minutes to stretch and move around is very important. If you are driving to your destination, be sure to take a break from the confines of your vehicle, take advantage of rest areas, and walk around for a few minutes to get the blood flowing. On long flights, it's acceptable to get up and stretch a bit in the aisle as long as you aren't

disturbing other travelers, and there isn't any turbulence. Once you arrive, take advantage of the amenities at your hotel. Swim in the pool or walk on the treadmill that most places have to get your circulation going and be more ready to see the sights.
It's also important to stretch a bit before the day's activities, especially if you are going to be walking a lot. Whether you are typically active or not, moving your body a little each day will help combat stiffness and help you feel better. Try walking to your destinations if possible instead of taking a cab or public transport. Not only does walking improve circulation, but it also allows you to more intimately connect with your surroundings. BONUS!!
Deep breathing will help put you in the proper mindset for your day as well. It allows you to approach the day refreshed and ready to go. If you are traveling with children, take this time to also explain to them what to expect during the day. Every child is different, but I have found that when they have an understanding of what the day will be like and what to expect, they are more likely to enjoy themselves, letting you enjoy the trip!
Rest!
Rest is perhaps the most important aspect of wellness; a lack of sleep can wreak havoc on your mood, energy, and mental wellbeing. It's easy to want to jam as much as possible into your trip, especially if it's a "bucket list" trip or a trip to Disney

World. It's only natural, as this might be the only time you go there. But building in enough time for proper rest will help you truly enjoy your time there. Rested travelers are more likely to fully enjoy and remember their experiences. Next time you vacation, make time for relaxation. Whether you lounge in a café or take a midday nap in your hotel room, you will afterward find yourself feeling better and appreciating your journey even more.
Nutrition
I'm a foodie, and when I travel, one of the best parts of the trip for me is trying new foods! But if culinary excitement—or the necessary evil of airport food—begins to interfere with your digestion and physical state, there are easy solutions.

For your next multi-hour flight or drive, bring along fruits like apples, bananas, and oranges, or other snacks like nuts or protein bars. They pack a nutritious punch and could be your saving grace when faced with limited dining options. Once you arrive at your destination, visit a farmers’ market or nearby grocery store if you want to replenish your snack supply.
Also, make a point to try local cuisine, be it from a fine dining venue or a street food vendor. Locally owned operations will not only have the best quality of food in the area but also provide an opportunity to experience the culture of the place you are visiting. But know your body, and if you have food allergies and can't verify what is in something you haven't had before, be very careful. The last thing you want to do on your vacation is spend time at the infirmary because something you ate didn't agree with you!
Be Mindful
It's very important to take time to just enjoy yourself and have a little downtime. I like to tell clients on a trip to Disney World to set aside at least one day and just enjoy the hotel.

Lounging by the pool, getting a massage, or doing some shopping are great ways to unwind. Carve out some time to read a book or check out the gardens around your hotel. Part of the reason we vacation is to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, right? So remember not to over schedule your vacation too!
Remember, no matter how much you plan, no trip will be perfect. Take the days as they come and embrace the opportunity to immerse yourself in a new place. Live in the moment and savor the experiences, and you will have a much better time. With these practices of mental and physical wellness in mind, you'll return from your trip not just with fond memories but also with a calmer and better-feeling body.
